World Investment Report 2007: Transnational Corporations, Extractive Industries and development

Abstract

The 2007 Report analyses the role of transnational corporations in extractive industries and evaluates their contribution to economic development in resource-rich economies. It examines investment trends in the oil, gas and mining sectors and assesses the changing structure of international production in natural resources. Particular attention is given to the participation of private and State-owned enterprises, the organization of global value chains and the factors driving investment in extractive activities. The Report considers how foreign investment affects resource management, productive capacity development, public revenues and broader economic transformation. It also evaluates policy approaches aimed at maximizing the developmental benefits of resource-based investment while addressing risks associated with dependence on commodity exports. The analysis contributes to the debate on how natural-resource wealth can support long-term, sustainable development.
