World Investment Report 2000: Cross-border Mergers and Acquisitions and Development

Abstract

The 2000 Report examines the growth of cross-border mergers and acquisitions as a major component of foreign direct investment (FDI) and assesses their implications for economic development. It analyses trends in international investment flows and evaluates how different modes of entry, including mergers, acquisitions and greenfield investments, affect employment, market structure, ownership and competitiveness in host economies. Particular attention is given to the challenges and opportunities faced by developing countries in managing increasing investor activity. The Report evaluates the policy and regulatory issues associated with liberalization and globalization and considers the role of public institutions in ensuring that investment contributes to development objectives. The analysis highlights the importance of effective governance, competition policy and investment regulation in maximizing the benefits of FDI while addressing potential economic and social concerns.
