Technology and Innovation Report 2010: Enhancing Food Security in Africa Through Science, Technology and Innovation

Abstract

The 2010 Report examines the role of science, technology and innovation in enhancing food security and agricultural development in Africa. It analyses the challenges facing agricultural systems in the region and assesses how innovation capabilities can contribute to higher productivity, increased incomes and broader economic development. Particular attention is given to the adaptation and diffusion of existing technologies, the strengthening of agricultural innovation systems and the interaction between research institutions, policymakers and farmers. The Report evaluates opportunities for improving food security through investments in scientific infrastructure, extension services and technological learning. It also considers the importance of tailoring technology strategies to local agroecological conditions and production systems. The analysis highlights policy measures aimed at strengthening innovation capabilities and supporting sustainable agricultural transformation.
