Trade and Development Report 2013: Adjusting to the changing dynamics of the world economy

Abstract

The 2013 Report examines how developing and transition economies can adapt to changing dynamics in the global economy following the financial crisis. It analyses the slowdown in global growth and trade and assesses the implications of weaker external demand for export-oriented development strategies. Particular attention is given to the limitations of growth models that depend heavily on external markets and international capital flows. The Report evaluates alternatives that rely more strongly on domestic and regional demand, productive investment and income growth. It considers the role of employment policies, social transfers, public expenditure and income distribution in supporting sustainable demand-led growth. The analysis highlights opportunities for expanding South-South trade and strengthening domestic markets while maintaining the benefits of international economic integration.
