Trade and Development Report 2003: Capital Accumulation, Growth and Structural Change

Abstract

The 2003 Report examines the links between capital accumulation, structural change and long-term economic growth in developing countries. It analyses global economic conditions and evaluates how trade and financial flows, investment patterns and development strategies have influenced growth performance since the 1990s. Particular attention is given to the experience of Latin America and to the effects of market-oriented reforms on industrial development, competitiveness and resilience to external shocks. The Report assesses the relationship between investment, industrialization and productivity growth and considers alternative approaches to development strategy. The analysis highlights the importance of structural transformation, productive investment and policy space in fostering sustained growth and reducing vulnerability to external economic disturbances.
