Trade and Development Report 2000: Global Economic Growth and Imbalances

Abstract

The 2000 Report examines the recovery of the world economy following the financial crises of the late 1990s and analyses the continuing vulnerabilities associated with global financial integration. It reviews growth trends in developed and developing economies and assesses the factors underlying the recovery of East Asia after the 1997 crisis. Particular attention is given to the interaction between financial markets, macroeconomic policy and development prospects in an increasingly globalized economy. The Report evaluates the sustainability of the recovery and considers the policy measures required to strengthen resilience to external shocks. The analysis highlights the challenges posed by financial instability, volatile capital movements and uneven growth patterns, and discusses their implications for sustained development and international economic cooperation.
