Economic Development in Africa Report 2008: Export performance following trade liberalization: Some patterns and policy perspectives

Abstract

The 2008 Report analyses export performance in Africa following trade liberalization and assesses the extent to which trade reforms have contributed to export diversification, competitiveness and economic growth. It examines trends in export composition, market concentration and trade performance across countries and sectors and evaluates the interaction between liberalization policies and structural characteristics of African economies. Particular attention is given to the continuing importance of commodity exports and the challenges associated with diversification into higher value-added products and services. The Report assesses the factors influencing export competitiveness and identifies policy measures that can strengthen productive capacities and supply-side capabilities. The analysis highlights the importance of complementary policies that support diversification, technological upgrading and greater participation in international markets.
