Economic Development in Africa Report 2023: The Potential of Africa to capture technology-intensive global supply chains

Abstract

The 2023 Report examines Africa's potential to participate more deeply in technology-intensive global supply chains amid changing patterns of international production and trade. It analyses opportunities arising from the continent's resource endowments, expanding markets and growing industrial capabilities, particularly in sectors linked to advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, electronics, pharmaceuticals and other technology-intensive industries. The Report assesses factors affecting supply-chain participation, including infrastructure, skills, finance, industrial policy and regional integration. Particular attention is given to the development of regional value chains and their role in strengthening productive capacities and technological upgrading. The analysis explores strategies for increasing domestic value addition, improving competitiveness and supporting industrialization. Policy recommendations focus on enabling African economies to capture greater benefits from evolving global production networks and technological change.
