Economic Development in Africa Report 2022: Rethinking the Foundations of Export Diversification in Africa – The Catalytic Role of Business and Financial Services

Abstract

The 2022 Report examines the role of services in promoting export diversification and structural transformation in Africa. It analyses the contribution of knowledge-intensive services, including information and communications technology and financial services, to productivity growth, competitiveness and economic diversification. Particular attention is given to the interaction between services sectors, manufacturing activities and participation in regional and global value chains. The Report evaluates barriers to services trade and assesses how implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area can strengthen the contribution of services to development. It also considers the importance of innovation, skills development and access to finance for enterprises seeking to expand into higher value-added activities. The analysis identifies policy options aimed at enhancing services-sector efficiency, supporting diversification and increasing the resilience and competitiveness of African economies.
