Economic Development in Africa Report 2001: Performance, Prospects and Policy Issues

Abstract

The 2001 Report assesses recent economic performance and development prospects in sub-Saharan Africa and examines the policy challenges associated with sustained growth and poverty reduction. It analyses the effects of declining aid flows, debt burdens, terms-of-trade developments and adjustment policies on economic outcomes across the region. The Report evaluates alternative approaches to development financing, trade policy and debt management, with particular attention to their implications for growth and social welfare. It argues that stronger economic performance requires a combination of domestic policy reforms and supportive international measures. The analysis identifies priority areas for action in development finance, international trade and poverty reduction strategies, and discusses how policy choices at both national and international levels can contribute to improved development outcomes.
