Economic Development in Africa Report 2015: Unlocking the Potential of Africa´s Services Trade for Growth and Development

Abstract

The 2015 Report examines the contribution of the services sector to economic growth, structural transformation and regional integration in Africa. It analyses the performance of key services industries and assesses their role in supporting productivity, employment creation and diversification across the continent. Particular attention is given to infrastructure services, regulatory frameworks and trade in services, as well as their links with manufacturing, agriculture and other productive sectors. The Report evaluates the constraints that limit the efficiency and competitiveness of African service providers and considers how these affect development outcomes. It also examines the potential contribution of services trade to regional integration and participation in regional and global value chains. The analysis identifies policy measures aimed at improving service-sector performance, strengthening competitiveness and enabling services to play a greater role in sustainable and inclusive economic development.
