Economic Development in Africa Report 2014: Catalysing Investment for Transformative Growth in Africa

Abstract

The 2014 Report examines the role of investment in supporting economic transformation and long-term growth in Africa. It analyses recent investment trends, assesses investment performance relative to development needs and evaluates the contribution of investment to productive capacity development, employment creation and poverty reduction. The Report explores factors affecting both the quantity and quality of investment, including domestic savings, foreign investment, capital flight, infrastructure development and international economic conditions. Particular attention is given to the importance of directing investment towards strategic sectors capable of supporting structural transformation and economic diversification. The analysis considers policies for improving investment productivity, strengthening linkages between domestic and foreign enterprises and enhancing coherence between investment, trade and development strategies. Policy recommendations focus on creating conditions that support sustained and transformative growth across African economies.
