Economic Development in Africa Report 2013: Intra-African Trade: Unlocking Private Sector Dynamism

Abstract

The 2013 Report examines the role of intra-African trade in supporting economic growth, diversification and regional integration. It analyses patterns of trade within Africa and assesses the characteristics of the continent's enterprise structure that influence trade performance and competitiveness. Particular attention is given to the relationship between productive capacities, entrepreneurship and regional trade expansion. The Report evaluates the implementation of regional trade agreements and identifies barriers that limit the realization of potential gains from regional integration. It argues that stronger productive capacities and dynamic domestic enterprises are essential for increasing intra-African trade and maximizing its developmental benefits. The analysis explores policy approaches that combine trade liberalization with measures to strengthen industrial development, private sector capabilities and economic integration. Recommendations focus on promoting a development-oriented approach to regional integration and trade cooperation.
