Economic Development in Africa Report 2009: Strengthening regional economic integration for Africa’s development

Abstract

The 2009 Report examines the contribution of regional economic integration to Africa's development and analyses recent trends in intra-African trade, investment, migration and services. It assesses the potential of regional integration to strengthen productive capacities, foster economic diversification and improve competitiveness in a globalized economy. The Report evaluates regional integration initiatives and identifies institutional, regulatory and infrastructural constraints that limit deeper economic cooperation among African countries. Particular attention is given to the development implications of expanding regional markets and strengthening cross-border economic linkages. The analysis explores how regional integration can contribute to structural transformation and greater resilience to external shocks. Policy recommendations focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment and mobility while supporting long-term development objectives and economic transformation.
