Economic Development in Africa Report 2000: Capital flows and growth in Africa

Abstract

The 2000 Report examines the relationship between capital flows and economic growth in Africa, with particular attention to the role of foreign direct investment, official development assistance and private financial flows. It analyses trends in external financing and assesses their contribution to investment, productivity and long-term development. The Report considers the structural factors that influence the effectiveness of capital inflows, including domestic institutional capacities, macroeconomic conditions and financial market development. It also evaluates policy options for improving the developmental impact of external resources and reducing vulnerabilities associated with dependence on foreign financing. The analysis highlights the need for financing strategies that support productive investment, economic diversification and sustainable growth while strengthening Africa’s capacity to mobilize domestic and international resources for development.
