Abstract

The paper combines the literature on aspirations formation and on the importance of perceptions in the decision-making process. The richness of a National Survey on Social Mobility (EMOVI-2012) is used to test the hypothesis on whether perceptions are relevant for two outcomes: parents´ aspirations about the education of their children and appropriate schooling for age attainment. The paper finds that this was indeed the case. Both perceptions considered, the “static” one (i.e. where the person locates him/herself in the income distribution) as well as the “dynamic” one (i.e. how the person perceives social mobility for his/her generation) influence aspirations´ formation as well as schooling for age. It was found that if the person perceives that she/he belongs to a higher socioeconomic bracket (higher than the one the household objectively belongs based on all available indicators in the survey) is equivalent to the impact an additional year of parent´s schooling has on educational aspirations.
