La convergencia en México de 1950 a 2000: a través de econometría espacial

The regional income inequality in Mexico has not been discussed thoroughly, even though it is an extremely relevant issue. That is why the issue of convergence between the states in Mexico is analyzed in this paper. This objective will be achieved through the introduction of regional relations that exist between the states, using Spatial Econometrics. This paper will show that in terms of the Gross Domestic Product per person there has existed a regional relation during the 1950 – 2000 period; mainly between the “poor” states of the South. Additionally, it verifies that the growth rate of the Gross Domestic Product per person has isolated regional relations. The introduction of spatial relations of the Gross Domestic Product per person and of its growth rate, in the estimation of the convergence level in Mexico, does not alter the general conclusion of similar studies. That is, convergence is present during the 1950 – 1980 period and there is no divergence or convergence during the 1980 – 2000 period.
