Abstract

The price of the Basic Food Basket (CBA) is an important indicator of the relative cost of food and the purchasing power of Brazilian households, particularly among low-income populations. In this context, this study proposes the Relative Cost Index of the Basic Food Basket (I-CRCB), constructed from a standardized basic food basket for the Brazilian state capitals. The index provides a simple and intuitive way to identify which capitals exhibit costs above or below the national benchmark. The results reveal persistent heterogeneity across Brazilian state capitals, with systematic differences in the relative cost of the basic food basket and changes in the relative positions of capitals over time. The I-CRCB constitutes a complementary tool for monitoring the relative cost of food, providing an easily interpretable measure for regional economic analysis.
