Abstract

Micro and small companies are an important part of the functioning of the Brazilian economy, despite the problem of the high mortality rate, small businesses are resilient in generating employment and income. This work aims to characterize micro and small companies (MSEs) in the Midwest region based on the classification criteria adopted by Sebrae (number of employees). The methodology uses bibliographic research, analysis of secondary data and descriptive statistics, comparing the number of micro and small companies, the labor market and the characteristics of the mortality of MSEs. The results show that small businesses are concentrated in the trade and services sectors and are great job generators, it is also found that in MSEs there is high gender inequality both among micro-entrepreneurs and among workers: most individuals are of the male gender. The results also reveal that micro and small companies have low access to credit, high interest rates and default in relation to medium and large companies.
