Biofuels production and use have experienced a strong increase thanks to public incentives and to some of their advantages, such as being able to reduce energy dependency, creating jobs, notably in rural areas, or reducing environmental impact as compared to fossil fuels. Nevertheless, biofuels have been recently discussed due to the recent trends in energy and agricultural markets and to some studies that have cast some doubts about their advantages and disadvantages. The aim of this work is to summarize the main issues around biofuels. First, we present a brief overview of the historical trends and the current situation in Spain and the world. Then, we review the main arguments to support biofuels, the most well-known incentive policies that have been recently applied and, finally, a discussion about the most recent controversial issues.
