El papel de la desigualdad de ingresos en el proceso de crecimiento en Europa

Abstract

En los últimos años se ha publicado un amplio número de investigaciones sobre desigualdad de ingresos y crecimiento económico, si bien aún no hay unanimidad sobre el efecto que la primera ejerce sobre el segundo ni sobre el tipo de correlación que subyace entre ambos. A partir de ello, este trabajo tiene el objetivo de responder a la pregunta: ¿cuál es el papel que desempeña la desigualdad de ingresos en el proceso de crecimiento económico? y, por ende, ¿cuál es la correlación existente entre ambas variables? La investigación empírica se ha centrado en 12 países europeos, todos ellos desarrollados, en el periodo 1975–2009. La conclusión final es que las desigualdades no extremas pueden favorecer el proceso de crecimiento económico.
