Abstract

The working paper reports characteristics and problems of product development activities in the Japanese mobile phone industry. More than 15 mobile phone manufacturers have competed furiously in the domestic market where Japanese specific protocol is dominant. In order to respond to their users ]domestic mobile phone careers,Japanese manufacturers have equally developed customized products for domestic careers, conducted frequent model changes of platforms, and built product development capabilities. Meanwhile,as domestic market matures quantitatively and global protocol emerges,Japanese manufacturers come to compete with global manufacturers.Compared with global manufacturers,Japanese ones have developed customized products for domestic careers. Therefore it is inferred that emerging competition urges Japanese manufacturers to search and design new product development routines.
