Abstract

L'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé a fait de l'Indice de Masse Corporelle (IMC), rapport du poids sur le carré de la taille, l'instrument privilégié pour l'étude de la corpulence au niveau mondial. Tirant ses origines des travaux d'Adolphe Quetelet dont on lui donne aussi parfois le nom, cet indice ne s'est imposé que récemment pour saisir et mesurer l'obésité sur de larges populations. Son caractère pratique, puisqu'il repose sur les données de la taille et du poids, qui sont plus facilement accessibles que le tour de taille par exemple, a fortement contribué à son succès. L'usage de cet outil comporte toutefois un certain nombre de limites qui tiennent pour une grande part à la manière dont cet indice a été construit et qui conditionnent aujourd'hui la manière dont est mesurée la corpulence.
