Abstract

La disponibilità di informazioni migliora le scelte individuali di imprese e consumatori, ma il suo impatto sull’efficienza del mercato dipende dalla struttura concorrenziale di quest’ultimo. In mercati concorrenziali, la produzione e la diffusione di informazioni accresce l’efficienza. Tuttavia, a causa di esternalità, generate dalla non rivalità nel consumo dell’informazione, la produzione e diffusione di informazioni possono essere inferiori al livello socialmente efficiente. In mercati con rilevante potere monopolistico e barriere all’entrata, la diffusione di informazioni può facilitare la collusione tra le imprese, e quindi ridurre il benessere sociale. Tuttavia, la diffusione di informazioni tra i consumatori e le imprese potenziali entranti nel mercato riduce sia le barriere all’entrata che il potere monopolistico delle imprese attive, e quindi accresce l’efficienza. In mercati con concorrenza imperfetta e senza barriere all’entrata, la diffusione di informazioni può avere effetti diversi a seconda del grado di sostituibilità dei prodotti. Se la sostituibilità è molto bassa o molto elevata, la diffusione delle informazioni accresce il benessere. Nei casi intermedi, l’effetto è ambiguo. Infine in mercati con asimmetrie informative, la diffusione di informazioni tende ad accrescere l’efficienza e intensificare la concorrenza, per cui può essere giustificato un intervento pubblico per incentivare lo scambio di informazioni, come avviene nel mercato del credito.
