Abstract

The novel The Paltry Demon illustrates the life of various social categories of people, among which is the main character, Ardalion Borisîci, whom is presented along the novel as Peredonov. The action is settled in a small town from Russia, apparently under the influence of a patriarchal atmosphere with people going to the church, attending social gatherings. The story focuses on the life of Peredonov and on the way that the character is willing to promote in his professional career, culminating with his strong desire of getting the job of school inspector. Therefore, the highschool teacher, having the distinguished signs of a Paranoidal disease, releases an obsession of getting a social status more and more respectable. His obsession expresses itself more intense along the novel, and this aspect is reveal in his acts of violence and in his provoking and extremely authoritative behaviour toward his pupils at class.
