Abstract

The increasing generation of waste in urban centers demands ever more resources for effective waste management. This article assesses how the introduction of fees for solid waste collection and management translates into service improvements and indirect public health impacts, specifically regarding the reduction of disease incidence related to inadequate waste management practices. The results demonstrate positive effects of taxation on the reduction of open dumps, the presence of selective collection, and adherence to waste management regulations. However, these improvements did not result in direct health benefits for the population.
