Abstract

The economic cooperation in terms of port logistics between the Korean Peninsula and China in the Tumen River area can be described as bimodal. That between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) mainly involves infrastructure construction projects, whereas the other mode between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) focuses on building logistic networks. The Tumen River area is a region where both China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the New Economic Map for the Korean Peninsula initiative by the Republic of Korea currently overlap with each other. This study reviews current development strategies of each state-level project in the Tumen River area, with a focus on port logistics. The rest of the paper investigates the relevant issues and proposes cooperation strategies in terms of port logistics across the three nations from short- and long-term perspectives.
