Abstract

Este capítulo sobre a economia imperial é de caráter introdutório e está dividido em dez seções, além desta introdução. O objetivo é colocar em perspectiva as análises mais detalhadas referentes à política econômica durante o período republicano que compõem os demais capítulos deste livro. As duas seções iniciais tratam de aspectos demográficos e do ritmo de crescimento durante o período imperial. A seção 3 considera as principais culturas agrícolas, sua evolução no tempo e distribuição regional, além de fazer referência aos outros setores de menor importância como indústria e mineração. As três seções seguintes abordam os fatores de produção relevantes na expansão da cultura cafeeira no Brasil imperial: trabalho, terra e capital. Nas seções 7, 8 e 9 são consideradas questões relacionadas ao comércio exterior, aos diferentes regimes monetários e às finanças públicas. A seção 10 conclui.
