Entry in the academic career : the optimal post-doc duration

Abstract

Since the eighties, French Ph.D. students have the opportunity, after completing their Ph.D., to take a post-doctoral position (commonly referred to as "post-doc"=. A "post-doc" is a temporary research job in a foreign university of firm. Originally these positions were created to encourage international mobility of young researchers. Reasons for doing a post-doc are mainly accumulation of extra human capital, prestige, and discovering how research work is conducted aboad. There is a strong selection to enter a post-doc, but once one has been obtained, it is fairly easy to have it reconducted (or at least to obtain a similar job). So, for Ph.D. who are recruited on a post-doc, the duration of their staying abroad is rather free. We want to show in this paper that, nonetheless, the post-doc duration must be carefully chosen by the youg Ph.D., since it exerts a strong influence on his/her further career course, and especially on his/her possibility to enter the French academic sector. ...French Abstract : Depuis le début des années 80 les étudiants français en thèse ont la possibilité de réaliser un séjour post doctoral (communément appelé post-doc) une fois leur diplôme obtenu. Ce séjour, effectué pour la plupart à l'étranger, se concrétise par un emploi temporaire dans le milieu de la recherche. Ces séjours ont principalement pour but de favoriser la mobilité et les collaborations internationales des jeunes chercheurs. Bien que la sélection à l'entrée du post-doc soit importante, une fois décroché, il est fréquent de connaître plusieurs épisodes du même type. Ainsi, la durée des séjours post doctoraux peut être assez variable pour les docteurs pouvant en bénéficier. Cet article tente de montrer, sur la base d'une enquête réalisée auprès de 800 docteurs en Sciences de la vie, que la durée de cette période post doctorale doit cependant être choisie à bon escient car elle exerce une influence considérable sur la carrière future des chercheurs et principalement sur leur entrée dans le milieu académique français.
