Abstract

El documento estudia el impacto de los pagos digitales en el sector bancario a través de un modelo de equilibrio parcial. En el modelo, los bancos otorgan préstamos usando depósitos y fondeo externo, el cual está sujeto a una fricción financiera. Se encuentra que los pagos digitales aumentan la demanda por depósitos, incrementando el poder de mercado de los bancos y su oferta de préstamos. Asimismo, esta innovación financiera fortalece la transmisión de política monetaria hacia los costos de financiamiento de las firmas. Sin embargo, los beneficios de los pagos digitales en términos de mayores préstamos y menores costos de financiamiento para las firmas se ven limitados cuando la mayor liquidez de los depósitos aumenta los costos transaccionales de usar efectivo.
