The Supply of Urban Housing: Comment

Abstract

This comment discusses terminological issues related to the analysis of housing. It treats the definition of housing quality, and stresses the importance of distinguishing between supply and reduced form elasticities, between partial and total elasticities, and between stock and flow elasticities. Some of the pitfalls of housing market analysis are demonstrated by reference to Barton Smith, " The Supply of Urban Housing", Quarterly Journal of Economics, (1976), 389-405,
