Lasten vaikutus äidin palkkaan

Abstract

Tutkimuksessa selvitetään lasten vaikutusta äidin palkkaan. Tutkimusmenetelminä käytetään regressioanalyysiä ja kaltaistamista (matching). Aineistona on Tilastokeskuksen työssäkäyntitilasto, josta poimitaan 18–64-vuotiaat naiset (7 224 naista) vuonna 2001. Yksityiskohtaisempi tarkastelu suoritetaan palkkatuloa saaneille naisille (6 843 naista). Tutkimustulokset ovat molemmilla estimointimenetelmillä samansuuntaiset. Regressiomallissa lapsilla on noin 11 prosentin negatiivinen vaikutus äidin vuosipalkkaan. Lasten vaikutus pienenee 10 prosenttiin, jos äiti osallistuu työmarkkinoille. Lasten lukumäärä muuttaa vaikutuksen suuruutta merkittävästi vasta sitten kun lapsia on kolme tai useampi, jolloin palkkaeron suuruus on noin 22 prosenttia. Sen sijaan lasten iällä on merkitystä. Alle kouluikäisten lasten vaikutus on suurinta, noin 19 prosentin luokkaa: yksi alle kouluikäinen lapsi alentaa äidin vuosipalkkaa noin 10 prosentilla, kaksi alle kouluikäistä 19 prosentilla ja kolme alle kouluikäistä jopa 30 prosentilla. Kaltaistamisella lasten negatiivinen vaikutus äidin vuosipalkkaan on noin 10 prosenttia. Kolme tai useampi lapsi alentaa vuosipalkkaa 18 prosentilla. Alle kouluikäisten lasten negatiivinen vaikutus palkkaan on noin 20 prosenttia.
