Abstract

Serbian. English. The paper discusses the current state and perspectives of the development of the textile industry in Serbia. As one of the oldest industries in the world, the textile industry in Serbia (and Yugoslavia) was highly developed and had great importance in the creation of GDP, the absorption of unemployed workers (especially women) and export income. Unfortunately, in the last decade of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century, the country was deindustrialized, and its industry, especially the textile industry, was devastated. Large enterprises, as the basis of this strong branch, were liquidated, so now this industry consists mainly of small enterprises, which are largely dependent on imports. They are grouped into five zones (Central Serbia, Northern Serbia, Western Serbia, Eastern Serbia and Southwestern Serbia), with different production programs. The future development of the textile industry in Serbia must be seen in the context of reindustrialization and balanced regional development. It must be carefully planned and executed.
