Abstract

This compendium of 27 case studies focuses on the profession of informal moneylending in the urban and rural sectors. It attempts to offer answers to the question of whether or not the covert nature of informal lending serves as an obstacle to monitoring the financial market. Together with this question also come several issues. What is the best method for gaining information on the suppliers of credit? What questions can be asked? Will respondents cooperate in the endeavor? Will they be willing to be monitored all the time? Conducting interviews with the moneylenders for 14 months, this paper hopes to provide answers to the issues above.
