Abstract

Electricity is a strategic issue for the socioeconomic development of a region, and renewable resources have a fundamental role in meeting energy demand in medium and long-term future scenarios. The huge solar energy potential along with the Brazilian territory, together with recent regulations for decentralized generation in the energy market, the PV generation is becoming more and more attractive. This paper presents the economic viability analysis for two PV systems using Payback Time (PB), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Net Present Value (NPV). The first PV system was designed to meet the partial energy demand of the multifamily building and connected to the distribution grid. The second system is an isolated PV system providing electricity for a shopping mall. The results have demonstrated the feasibility of PV generation for the multifamily building but not for commercial buildings due to low energy costs in the free energy market. The Brazilian Government should increase financial incentives for solar generation in large commercial buildings where energy demand presents and daily cycle similar to the solar energy resource, like large shopping malls.
