Abstract

This text explores why certain political demonstrations choose specific locations within the urban fabric over others. It begins with the premise that, despite the progressive loss of spontaneity in contemporary protests, they continue to function as tactical responses that inscribe conflict into the city. A theoretical framework based on three temporalities—tradition, conversation, and repercussion—is proposed, allowing protest spaces to be classified not as fixed categories, but as overlapping intensities. Through recent examples from the city of Barcelona, the text reveals how demonstrations inherit logics from religious rituals, popular celebrations, wars, theatrical acts, and urban scenographies. It argues that, even within a context of increasing control, demonstrations reappear wherever the urban order shows fissures. Each spatial decision is read as a complex synthesis of memory, message, and projection, and as a political act of inscription in the territory.
