Abstract

The Region of La Araucanía, located in southern Chile, is a territory of high geographical, cultural, and socioeconomic relevance. Covering an area of 31,842 km², it extends between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, encompassing a diversity of ecosystems that support agricultural, forestry, and tourism activities. The region, composed of the provinces of Cautín and Malleco, has a population of 1,010,423 inhabitants (Census 2024) and holds the highest proportion of Indigenous population in the country, with 34.5% belonging to the Mapuche people. This deeply rooted cultural presence is central to the region’s identity and to ongoing debates about autonomy and ancestral rights. However, La Araucanía faces persistent structural challenges, including high multidimensional poverty rates, pronounced urban–rural disparities in access to basic services, and an economy highly concentrated in primary sectors. This report provides a comprehensive characterization of the region, examining its productive structure, labor market, consumption patterns, foreign trade, innovation landscape, and economic projections. The aim is to contribute to the analysis of regional development from an interdisciplinary perspective that links economic, social, and territorial dimensions, offering key insights to inform public policy and sustainable development strategies within the regional context.
