Analyzing Democratic Backsliding in East Asia and the Implications for Human Rights

Abstract

The number of countries experiencing democratic backsliding in East Asia is increasing. India, Burma, or the Philippines are notable examples of East Asian nations facing the trend of decreasing levels of liberal democracy. This paper investigates how democratic backsliding leads to authoritarianism and human rights abuses through quantitative analysis. In addition, this paper investigates how a new authoritarian East Asian order enables further democratic backsliding and human rights abuses. Through this analysis, I concluded that countries who experience democratic backsliding often devolve into authoritarian states that violate human rights to retain their status quo. This trend enables further authoritarianism in East Asia through debt trap diplomacy and regional authoritarian cooperation.
