The Dire Socio-Economic State of Saskatchewan

Abstract

The Canadian province of Saskatchewan is in a dire socio-economic state, falling last in the country on numerous indicators of education, health, and public safety, while performing moderately in economy. Saskatchewan’s decline has been sustained over numerous years, with many indicators worse than double or triple national averages for multiple years. During this time, research, policy, and programming interventions have attempted to raise alerts of and address discrete indicators, yet no known report has presented an overarching state of the province. This article provides a snapshot of numerous indicators – informed by The Human Development Index and Statistics Canada’s Quality of Life Framework – to indicate the present and persistent difficulties in Saskatchewan as complex and multi-layered. Through the lens of sustained negative impacts of austerity, this article discusses potential for improvement through nonprofit revitalization initiatives.
