Abstract

This text offers a radical critique of the concept of “public space” through the spatial analysis of political manifestations. In contrast to the abstract and normative rhetoric that accompanies this category, it argues for its replacement by a more operative notion: the street. Through a theoretical and etymological exploration, it dismantles the foundations of the contemporary idea of public space, exposing its ideological character and its function as an instrument of control. In opposition, the street is presented as a scene of everyday life and conflict, where the urban reveals itself in its rawest form. Drawing on five conceptual categories derived from the five research hypotheses of this project, the text constructs an alternative perspective from which to think the city—not from the norm, but from the gesture—thus proposing a critical path forward for contemporary architecture and urbanism.
