Why a Transition to Renewable Energy On Its Own is Not a Solution to the Climate Emergency

Abstract

It is often argued, by both climate scientists and activists, that there are straightforward solutions to the climate emergency, which only require the political will to implement them from governments beholden to the fossil fuel industry; namely, a transition from fossil fuels to energy entirely produced by renewable means, improving energy efficiency, and ending deforestation and the destruction of wetlands. We shall show that more than this is required, but that this ‘more’ may very well be more than the climate scientists and activists themselves can stomach.
