COMPETITIVENESS AND PROSPECTS OF SILK COMMODITY IN THE FUTURE (Evidence From Silk Weaving Industry of South Sulawesi Province)

Abstract

Purpose - To determine the competitiveness of silk commodities in South Sulawesi and market prospects in the future especially to towards Asean Economic Community 2015. Design/methodology/approach - Data in this research is silk production data 2005 - 2012. Analysis data using analysis of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). While the analysis Porter's Diamond Theor, was conducted to explain the potential, constraints, and opportunities of silk commodity in South Sulawesi Province. Findings - The result of this research showed that Silk is not only used as a tool for economic development of the society but also encouraged the spirit to preserve the cultural heritage of their ancestors. Silk commodity South Sulawesi Province from 2005 to 2012 has a very high competitiveness, and the value of RCA > 1. The great value 2007 and the lowest RCA value for the year 2011. The overall development competitiveness of silk commodities indicated by the IRCA value showed that fluctuating growth. Marketing prospect of silk commodity in South Sulawesi is very potential because South Sulawesi is the largest center of silk industry in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the three ASEAN countries that produce silk commodities in Asean Economic Community. Originality/value - Although some previous studies conducted related to the competitiveness of commodity but the difference with this research is in this research in addition to used quantitative analysis of the competitiveness RCA is also used with a qualitative analysis from Porter's Diamond Theory analysis.
