Abstract

Kemuculan teori pembangunan tidak dapat dilepaskan dari kepentingan dan konteks sosial yang berpengaruh besar pada zaman tersebut. Teori pembangunan merupakan serangkaian teori yang digunakan sebagai acuan membangun masyarakat. Dalam perkembangannya, beragam pendekatan muncul dalam teori pembangunan yang kemudian saling memberikan kritik satu dengan yang lain. Awalnya pembangunan dipandang hanya sebagai fenomena ekonomi saja. Namun, banyak negara yang mulai menyadari bahwa pertumbuhan (growth) tidak identik dengan pembangunan (development). Pembangunan ekonomi yang mulanya hanya diukur dari prestasi kuantitatif semata, selanjutnya juga memperhatikan peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat secara lebih kompleks. Pembangunan pada akhirnya menuntut pemusatan perhatian pada hal-hal yang lebih daripada sekedar sisi material.
