Abstract

Dalam sejarah Islam, al-Maqrizi mengemukakan bahwa mata uang yang beredar di kalangan bangsa Arab pada masa jahiliyah adalah emas dan perak, tidak ada yang lain, yang datang dari berbagai kerajaan. Dinar Heraclius (Kaisar Byzantin) berasal dari Romawi, sedangkan dirham perak berasal dari Persia. Dari uraian di atas menunjukkan bahwa uang yang digunakan oleh umat Islam pada masa Rasulullah adalah dinar emas Romawi dan dirham perak Persia dalam bentuk aslinya. Sedangkan khalifah yang pertama kali menerbitkan dinar dan dirham untuk diberlakukan di negara Islam adalah khalifah Bani Umayah, Abdul Malik bin Marwan pada tahun 74 H. Kebijakan pembuatan uang Islami seperti itu dilanjutkan oleh pemerintah pemerintah Islam sesudahnya dan pada skhir Daulah Utsmaniyah mulailah uang kertas beredar dan berlaku di hampir semua wilayah Islam.
