Abstract

Dalam teori nilai guna dibedakan menjadi dua pengertian : Nilai guna total dan nilai guna marjinal Hipotesis utama teori nilai guna, atau lebih dikenal sebagai hukum nilai guna marjinal yang semakin menurun, menyatakan bahwa tambahan nilai guna yang diperoleh seseorang dari mengkonsumsikan suatu barang akan menjadi semakin sedikit apabila orang tersebut terus menerus menambah konsumsinya ke atas barang tersebut. Salah satu pemisalan penting dalam teori ekonomi adalah setiap orang akan berusaha untuk memaksimumkan kepuasan yang dapat dinikmatinya.dengan perkataan lain, setiap orang akan berusaha untuk memaksimumkan nilai guna dari barang-barang yang dikonsumsikannya. Cara memaksimumkan nilai guna yaitu dalam menentukan susunan atau komposisi dan jumlah barang yang akan mewujudkan nilai guna yang maksimum bersumber dari perbedaan harga-harga berbagai barang. Kalau harga barang adalah bersamaan, nilai guna akan mencapai tingkat yang maksimum apabila nilai guna marjinal dari setiap barang adalah sama besarnya Syarat yang harus dipenuhi agar barang-barang yang dikonsumsikan akan memberikan nilai guna yang maksimum adalah: Setiap rupiah yang dikeluarkan untuk membeli unit tambahan berbagai jenis barang akan memberikan nilai guna marjinal yang sama besarnya.
