Abstract
This paper introduces the Magica Inversion, a conceptual model explaining what occurs when actors who understand themselves as protectors discover that their own practices may also participate in producing the harm they seek to prevent. The concept takes its name from the categorical reversal in Puella Magi Madoka Magica, in which two apparently opposed categories are revealed to belong to the same generative structure; the paper uses this narrative structure as a cultural metaphor rather than translating the fictional transformation directly into a psychological model. The model begins with the Protective Self-Narrative, through which managers, teachers, caregivers, or other responsible actors interpret strict guidance, control, or correction as expressions of care, duty, or protection. Such intentions may be genuine, yet the social outcomes of these practices may diverge from their intended purposes, producing silence, reduced psychological safety, imitation of aggressive behavior, dependence, or withdrawal. The paper distinguishes Known Imperfection from Unknown Structural Meaning: an actor may already know that they are quick-tempered, perfectionistic, or controlling without recognizing how these traits function within a wider causal structure. Structural Feedback makes this hidden relationship visible by connecting dispersed events into a common generative pattern. When the actor then includes their own behavior as a variable in the causal model, a process termed Causal Self-Inclusion, the original protector identity may be reinterpreted. The Magica Inversion refers to this reversal of self-understanding: the discovery that a person who stood against a problem may also have participated in its production. The model does not describe a moral transformation from “good” to “bad,” nor does it assume that protective intention and harmful consequence are mutually exclusive. Instead, both may coexist within the same practice. Four post-inversion pathways are proposed: Narrative Repair, Narrative Rejection, Narrative Avoidance, and Defensive Retaliation. A longitudinal observational case is used to illustrate how Structural Feedback may be followed first by apparent acceptance and later by relational and informational avoidance, while avoiding claims about unobserved internal states. Finally, the paper proposes Identity-Preserving Correction as a repair principle that preserves legitimate protective purposes while revising harmful methods. The broader argument is that the deepest challenge of Structural Feedback is not discovering an unknown flaw, but discovering a new causal meaning in a flaw already known.
