Abstract

Dibandingkan dengan tanaman padi, tanaman jagung mempunyai kelebihan untuk dikembangkan di lahan kering dataran tinggi karena lebih tahan terhadap kekurangan air. Tanaman jagung berbiji putih selain banyak dimanfaatkan masyarakat sebagai bahan pangan (nasi jagung), juga dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku industri rumah tangga seperti marning jagung, emping jagung dan lain-lain. Jagung putih lokal sudah biasa ditanam petani di lahan kering dataran tinggi kabupaten Temanggung karena kebanyakan petani di wilayah ini menggunakan jagung putih sebagai makanan pokok.Sebagai bahan makanan, jagung mengandung nutrisi (karbohidrat, protein, lemak dan mineral) yang tidak kalah dibandingkan dengan beras (Yasin, 2008). Produktivitas jagung putih di tingkat petani umumnya masih rendah, yaitu 1,6 - 2 ton/ha. Produktivitas yang rendah tersebut antara lain disebabkan (1) digunakannya benih yang kualitasnya rendah, (2) penerapan budidaya kurang intensif, dan (3) sulitnya didapati jagung putih unggul di lapangan (BPTP Jateng, 2005).
