Can productivity secure Veneto's competitive future?

Abstract

Veneto has long been one of Italy’s most productive and internationally competitive regions. However, productivity growth has slowed markedly in recent years, causing the region to lose ground relative to many of its European peers. Without a renewed productivity agenda, future gains in competitiveness, wages and living standards may become increasingly difficult to sustain. Understanding the sources of the slowdown and identifying effective policy responses is essential to ensuring the region’s long term prosperity.
