Abstract

The study of the characteristics of financial markets and the reaction of investors to financial information has been performed in the last decades with the help of the methodology of event studies. The need of measuring the reaction of the market to different financial and economics events makes necessary to count with econometric tools which assure the validity and robustness of the results obtained in these studies. That is why we consider necessary to make a overview of event studies? framework so as to help researchers to get more robust results. In fact, there exist several important surveys on this topic in the foreign literature, maybe too much rough and, in any case, never referred specifically to the Spanish financial markets. That is the gap we want to fulfill with this work which offers guidance to face an event study with more confidence. The event study literature is a vast area in finance. Though short?term methods are quite reliable, long?term methods present serious limitations despite the improvements researchers have introduced recently. This paper presents the conceptual and statistical problems related with the estimation and testing of long?term returns and the methodological advances designed to overcome them. In this way, our aim is to provide researchers with some useful tools to approach to this suggestive topic.
