Abstract

[eng] Expectations and the response. Et imports to price and exchange-rate changes. Leonard Dudley, Carole Trépanier. Recent tests of the hypothesis that trade flows respond in the same way to relative-price and exchange-rate variations have presented conflicting results. However, these studies have failed to specify adequately how expectations are formed under alternative exchange regimes. We present a model of the relationship between expectations and trade flows and apply it to the bilateral trade between four industrial countries. Our results, which indicate that imports are more sensitive to the exchange rate than to a commonly-used price index may be explained by an observation error implicit in the choice of price index and by the expectations of importers concerning future prices and exchange rates.
